The Feast of Creation—liturgy in times of crisis.

April 5-7, 2027

The 78th meeting of the Institute of Liturgical Studies will continue to consider the possibilities of keeping a Feast of Creation from September 1 through October 4 with an eye toward considering the season as an expression of the Church in times of crisis.

Last year, we reflected on creation and the incarnation as experienced through the materiality of our sacramental life as a way of framing the Feast. We were also introduced to a critical petro-theology that shows how enmeshed our theological frameworks are in an extractive economy and culture that regards what we bring from the ground as a divine gift.

This year, we will attempt to deepen our understanding of the place of creation in the Biblical text as well as consider the role of the liturgy in times of crisis. We will also consider the current conditions and possible future of artificial intelligence – the latest form of uncritically engaged extraction – as it relates to the work of the Church.
