Law Enforcement Applicant Test Preparation Course

Valparaiso University Continuing Education and the City of Valparaiso Police Department are working together to offer a course to help you prepare for the written and physical tests that occur in law enforcement hiring processes. This course will address topics used in application tests including physical agility, test taking skills, deductive and inductive reasoning, flexibility of closure, information gathering, problem sensitivity, selective attention and spatial orientation, verbal comprehension, verbal expression, visualization, and behavioral orientation.

You will work with instructors who experts and established professionals in law enforcement and you will have the opportunity to talk with law enforcement leaders to learn what they look for in the hiring process. You will also learn about cultural aspects of various police departments to help you identify departments that are a good match for you.

Times, Dates, and Location

  • Wednesday evenings, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m, September 5, 2018 – October 3, 2018

Tuition

  • $335 $250 – Special 1st Cohort Discounted Rate.
  • We have a limited number of scholarships available which will be awarded based on financial need. Individuals wishing to apply for the scholarship should email a short essay (350-500 words) to continuing.ed@valpo.edu. Applicants should introduce themselves and explain why they should be considered for the scholarship. The scholarship application deadline is Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2018.

Registration Requirements

  • Students must be 18 years of age or older. (Officer applicants in Indiana and Illinois must be 21 to be hired.)
  • Students with felony or misdemeanor convictions may not be eligible to participate.

Credit

  • This is a non-credit course and may not count toward a degree program.

Photo of Christopher McQuillinChristopher McQuillin, J.D., is an Adjunct Professor in the School of Graduate Studies and Continuing Education, and also the Nursing School.  After graduating from Valparaiso University School of Law and working as a sole practitioner for about 10 years, he began working for Lake County Government in a number of Administrative positions.  These included supervising the Drug Unit, the Sheriff’s Work Release Program, Administration of the Lake County Jail as liaison to the Medical and Mental Health providers, and Compliance Officer assigned to assist with the Jail hiring process.  McQuillin was also a liaison to the County Board of Commissioners and County Council in the Request for Proposals and Bid process.  He began teaching college courses approximately 12 years ago, and is beginning his 6th year with Valparaiso University.

David Richardson PhotoDavid Richardson, B.S., has been a member of the Valparaiso Police department since 1996 and is currently the Captain of Patrol, overseeing 40 officers. He has held the positions of positions of Sergeant, Lieutenant, Field Training Officer, and Taser instructor. He has overseen the physical agility exam at VPD for new applicants for approximately 19 years. He was a SWAT operator with the Porter County Sheriff’s Department for 12 years. Richardson graduated from Ball State University with a major in athletic training and minor in criminal justice.  He also completed the Cooper Institute Law Enforcement Fitness Specialist Course.

Photo of Ryan RowanRyan Rowan, J.D. is a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney with the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office. Prior to joining Lake County, he served as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney with the Porter County Prosecutor’s Office for over the past five years. Rowan graduated from the University of Kansas majoring in African and African-American Studies and Political Science. After graduating the University of Kansas, he received his law degree from Valparaiso University and holds a Masters of Laws Degree in Taxation from The John Marshall Law School in Chicago, IL.

COURSE CANCELATION POLICY

Valparaiso reserves the right to cancel the course the course prior to the first day of class. If the course is cancelled, students will be notified by email and will receive a full refund of tuition paid to Valparaiso University.

ENROLLMENT CANCELLATION AND REFUND POLICY

Valparaiso University may cancel the enrollment of students who have registered for the course . Reasons for canceling enrollment may include, but are not limited to, a student not meeting the entrance criteria for the course. If Valparaiso University cancels the enrollment of a student, notification will be sent to the student by email. A full refund of tuition paid to Valparaiso University will be provided unless such cancellation occurs after the first day of class (beginning 12:01 a.m. Central Time) and is the result of the student’s wrongful acts or violation of University policy.

Students may cancel their enrollment in the course any time prior to the first day of class. To cancel their enrollment, students must request the cancelation in writing by emailing the request to continuing.education@valpo.edu. Full tuition refunds will be granted to any student if the cancelation request is received prior to the first day of class. No refunds will be given for refund requests received on or after the first day of class (beginning 12:01 a.m. Central Time). Refunds may be granted after the first day of class for students who experience emergency situations. Students should contact the Continuing Education Office for more information.

STUDENT CONDUCT POLICIES

Students are expected to conduct themselves with excellent behavior while participating in the course and while on the Valparaiso University Campus. Students will not infringe on the health, safety, and well-being of other students, staff, or University guests, nor will they threaten or damage Valparaiso University property.

Students dismissed from the course will not be eligible for a refund.
