Explore ethics and social responsibility with professors in Valpo’s honors college, Christ College. This certificate is open to all undergraduate Valpo students beginning in spring 2027.

Explore Ethics and Society at Valpo

Preparing to do good in the world requires more than expertise in your major. At Valpo, any undergraduate student can study ethics through Christ College’s certificate program. With the ethics and society certificate, you can complement any major with knowledge that will guide you in both your life and your career.

Designed for all majors, this 12-credit certificate focuses on discussion-based humanities courses. In seminars led by Christ College professors, you’ll engage with some of life’s biggest questions, such as: “What does it mean to live a good life?” and “What kind of person should I be?” Courses examine how ethics connect to the issues of today in a variety of fields, from healthcare to technology to education and more. You’ll develop a strong foundation that gives you the courage and confidence to tackle challenges in your field and the world.

About Our Ethics and Society Certificate

This certificate opens select Christ College courses to all Valpo undergraduate students. Through discussion-based seminars, you’ll build a foundation in ethics that will guide you far beyond graduation.

Certificate Requirements

The ethics and society certificate offers all Valpo undergraduate students an opportunity to engage with enduring questions about character and vocation. Led by Christ College professors, you’ll reflect on moral character, justice, and responsibility, bridging the liberal arts with professional and civic life.

Through the foundational seminar course, CC 245: Introduction to Ethics and Society, and three other seminars, students will engage with texts by influential figures throughout history, from Socrates to Sojourner Truth. You’ll develop a foundation in ethics and reflect on your own beliefs and values, preparing you to lead with integrity in your field.

Certificate Requirements (minimum 12 Cr.)

  • CC 245 – Introduction to Ethics and Society (IDEAS) – 3 Cr.*

Take three courses from the following options:

  • CC 300 – Seminar – 3 Cr.
  • CC 300CD – Seminar: Topics in Cultural Diversity – 3 Cr.
  • CC 300HL – Seminar: Topics in Literature – 3 Cr.
  • CC 300T3 – Seminar: Topics in Theology – 3 Cr.
  • Interdisciplinary courses approved by the Christ College dean

*Note: To enroll in CC 245, students must meet one of the following prerequisite options:

  • VUE 101 and VUE 102; or
  • CC 110A, CC 110B, CC 115A, and CC 115B; or
  • Permission of the Christ College dean.

All students in the certificate begin with the seminar course, CC 245: Introduction to Ethics and Society (IDEAS), which introduces core ethical frameworks. Drawing on literature, history, philosophy, and the social sciences, this seminar explores how ethical reflection shapes both personal character and public life. Students will examine moral traditions while reflecting on enduring challenges raised by figures like Socrates — who urged us to “know thyself” — and Sojourner Truth, whose Ain’t I a Woman? confronts the moral conscience of a divided society. Through discussion, debate, and close reading, students will consider how individuals and communities pursue justice, integrity, and shared flourishing in the face of real-world complexity.

This course is open to students of all majors who meet the prerequisites (see certificate requirements above). No prior background in philosophy or ethics is required.
