If you are not planning to live on campus, keep scrolling to the “Don’t Plan on Living in On-Campus Housing?” section below.
Students will only be able to search for and request a roommate only after that person has also completed the On-Campus Housing Application. If you cannot find your desired roommate, then they need to complete the On-Campus Housing Application.
To find your desired roommate(s) log into your “Housing Self-Service”. Under the Room Selection Tab, select Roommates (ensure you are in the Fall 2026 dropdown) , you will then be able to search your roommate(s) based on their name. When you find your roommate(s) you will request them which will send them an email notification. Your roommate(s) will need to log into their Housing Self-Service to confirm you as their roommate. All students must be mutually matched (unless you are seeking a single room) by Friday, March 6, 2026 to be able to select a space.
Please review our Roommate Selection Guide for Returning Students for step by step instructions. If you do not have a roommate in mind, you may search for one via the Advanced Room Selection Search function.
If your desired roommate is not a current student at the university, please reach out to reslife@valpo.edu so we can assist you with your specific situation.
Students who complete the Returning Student Housing Confirmation by Friday, March 6th, will be arranged in total cumulative credit order with the student with the highest number of credits receiving the highest priority. Application submission date will be used to break ties. Once the list is arranged, students are then assigned a selection date/time.
On Wednesday, March 25th, you will be sent your Room Selection Appointment Time/date via your Valpo student email. Students will also be able to view their room selection date and appointment time in their Housing Self-Service Portal.
On Thursday, March 26th, the Room Selection Portal will be open for VIEWING ONLY! You will be able to log into the Housing Self-Service portal to begin to see how it works and how to search for rooms. You will be able to see all available room types and where they are located.
Room selection will occur Monday, March 30 – Wednesday, April 1st. If a student has a roommate selected and confirmed, the person with the earliest appointment time can select the room once it is their appointment time. Students are only able to see available rooms that match their group size. For example, if a student in a two-person grouping, they will only see vacant two-person spaces. At that point, all confirmed roommates will be able to be placed into the room as well. A student can pick their room on or after their appointment time. Please note a new student is released into the system every four minutes so inventory will change as students select.

Applications and Assignments
Frequently Asked Questions
Every effort is made to honor the preferences marked on the Returning Student Housing Confirmation. However, it is not possible to guarantee that each request will be met. The following procedures will be used.
Hall and/or room preferences.
- Returning students (current residence hall students AND students moving from off-campus) are given first preference to sign up for fall housing accommodations during this room selection process.
- New students (incoming freshmen, transfers, readmits) and those continuing students who failed to complete their Returning Student Housing Confirmation prior to the deadline noted above are assigned to the remaining spaces based on the following criteria.
- The date the completed Enrollment Agreement is received.
- Roommate preference. Requests must be mutual; roommate preference takes priority over building preference.
If you have a current medical accommodation on file with the Access and Accommodations Resource Center (AARC) you should have received an email from Residential Life in late January. Follow the steps listed in the email. If you did not receive an email and you think you should have, reach out to .
If you do NOT currently have a current Housing Special/Medical Accommodation or AARC Accommodation on file, you will need to complete a Medical Accommodation Provider Supporting Information Form ASAP and provide it to the AARC. We will then work with the AARC for the next steps of your accommodation. The form can be found HERE and once completed can be faxed to the AARC’s office 219.464.5086 or emailed to aarc@valpo.edu by your medical professional. You will need to complete this process as soon as possible to ensure we can assist you in picking a room that meets your accommodation needs.
The main halls that our first-year students reside are Brandt and Wehrenberg Halls. Each hall has the same amenities offered and have air conditioning in the rooms. Please feel free to take a tour HERE.
Wehrenberg and Brandt Halls are currently undergoing renovations and will be welcoming first-year students in the Fall of 2026! We are excited to open this first-year village for the Class of 2030!
Transfer students are placed with their class cohort. Upper-class students generally reside in Beacon Hall, Guild/Memorial Hall, and Alumni Hall. We try our best to place residents based on preference and hall availability at the time they complete their New Student Housing Confirmation form.
Mutual requests for specific roommates are honored when possible. Otherwise, roommates are assigned using the information supplied on the On-Campus Housing Application.
Students can request specific individuals as their roommate. To select a roommate, students log into their Housing Self-Service (via DataVU), and click on “Select Roommates” under the “Room Selection” tab. Students can then type in a specific name or search for a roommate based on living preferences. Each request then must be accepted by the other person. First-year students can only select one roommate since all first-year spaces only hold two students.
Room assignments are made without regard to race, gender, disability, sexual orientation, religion, or national or ethnic origin.
Notices of room assignments are emailed to incoming students in early June for students who have priority housing, students who do not complete their application by the priority deadline will receive their housing assignment mid-July. Along with your assignment, you will receive the name, email address, and phone number of your roommate and information on check-in procedures.
Returning students who participated in the returning student room selection process in March will be able to view their room assignment and roommates in the DataVU Housing Self-Service portal. Those who did not participate in the returning student room selection process will receive a confirmation of their room assignment in mid-July.
Room changes are allowed approximately two weeks after the start of each semester. To request a different room, students must complete a Room Change Request Form, available in Housing Self-Service.
Room Consolidation is a process that operates under the premise that residents paying for double occupancy are to reside in double accommodations. The process occurs in the first eight weeks of each semester (except for noncom change periods). The process provides residents in unpaid single rooms the option of (1) voluntarily accepting a roommate, (2) voluntarily moving to another double room accommodation, (3) being reassigned to a double occupancy configuration by Residential Life, or (4) signing for and accepting the additional cost of a single room, rather than consolidating.
Those students who do not comply with the process, refuse to accept a roommate, or refuse to move according to the policy are subject to disciplinary action and/or fines.
A limited number of single rooms are available. Most singles are assigned to current residents through our returning student room selection process. Demand usually exceeds supply. Indicating a preference for a single room on the New Student Housing Confirmation does not guarantee the request will be granted. Students who are granted a single room will be sent confirmation by Residential Life; all others will be assigned double rooms and placed on a single-room waiting list.
Limited singles will be available for Freshmen. Space availability is one reason, but more importantly, we feel it is critical for new students to have roommates for support and assistance during the first-year experience. Studies have shown that students having a roommate develop better interpersonal/social and coping skills during their first year when compared to students without roommates. In addition, studies show that first-year students with roommates get better grades, are less likely to withdraw, and generally report to be more satisfied with the college experience. Rest assured, we have staff that live on the floor, and are specially trained, that will be there to guide your student successfully through all of these experiences!
The University has a six-semester residency requirement. Exceptions are:
- Those having received an exemption through Residential Life.
- A student who has completed six (6) semesters of residency in campus housing.

For the fall semester, the residence halls open at 8 am on the Saturday before classes start for all NEW Valparaiso University students. Upon arrival, you will need to check-in at your residence hall’s front desk.
Returning Valpo students may check into their residence hall beginning at 9am on the Sunday before classes and students may continue to check in until 10 pm. If for any reason a student will be checking in later than the evening before the first day of classes, they should contact Residential Life to make arrangements for a late check-in.
Students arriving for the spring semester may move-in beginning at noon CDT on the Sunday before classes begin.
Break housing will be offered to international students and other residents who meet certain criteria. Break housing is typically provided in Alumni and Beacon Halls (subject to change). All other residences close for vacation periods and academic breaks. This includes Thanksgiving break, semester break, and the spring term recess. Students who anticipate a need for housing over break periods may wish to pursue an assignment in the aforementioned areas. Students must meet certain eligibility criteria in order to stay on campus over vacation periods and must apply for housing prior to each break.
