Welcome to the Web site of the Political Science Department at Valparaiso University! Historically, Political Science has occupied a central position in the liberal arts. The study of Politics focuses on the values that humans should seek, and the particular legal and structural organizations that allow us to realize our desired values. Contemporary Political Science combines this concern for normative issues with an emphasis on the development of scientific explanation of political matters. Hence, Political Science now stresses the use of sophisticated scientific procedures and empirical and quantitative methodology in seeking explanations as well as attempting a normative analysis. A major in Political Science leads to career opportunities in law, criminal
justice, business, education, government services, politics, policy analysis,
campaign management, and working for private interest groups. These are
just the general fields, there are many other areas of employment for
which a Political Science major would be helpful. Many of Valparaiso's
Political Science majors use the major to prepare for law school. Approximately
80% of our graduates do some type of graduate study either in law, Political
Science or a related area. |
