Valpo Grow

The GROW model is grounded in research on student learning and cognition. In order for new knowledge to “stick”, it needs to be transferred and applied across different contexts. This is achieved through helping students reframe their views of their employment experience through intentional conversations with their supervisors. The four questions are meant to provide the system to support high-quality reflection and learning transfer. 

GROW is considered to be a high-impact educational practice, which makes learning that occurs during student employment more visible to the students. GROW also provides student employees valuable practice transferring and applying skills in different settings and ways which contributes to academic success and growth, and personal success. 

GROW is a structured conversation model between student staff and supervisors about the connections between work, academics, and their career development. During these guided conversations, supervisors will ask their students the following questions:

1. How is this job fitting in with your academics?
2. What are you learning here that’s helping you in school?
3. What are you learning in class that you can apply here at work?
4. What have you learned here (at work) that you think you’ll use in your chosen profession?
