Rev. Brian E. Konkol, Ph.D. announced as Valparaiso University’s 20th President

Valparaiso University is proud to announce the appointment of Rev. Brian E. Konkol, Ph.D., as its 20th president. Selected following a national search, Rev. Konkol succeeds José Padilla, J.D., and steps into leadership at a pivotal moment in the University’s history. His appointment reflects Valpo’s continued commitment to mission-centered growth and a strong future built on academic excellence, faith, and service.

Rooted and Reaching

Rev. Brian E. Konkol’s vision for Valparaiso University is grounded in a simple yet powerful conviction: that Valpo is called to be both deeply rooted and boldly reaching. From the outset of his presidency, he has spoken with clarity and gratitude about the University’s Lutheran foundation, affirming that its enduring commitments to scholarship, freedom, and faith are not only relevant, but essential for this moment in higher education and in the world.

To be rooted, Rev. Konkol emphasizes, is to remain anchored in Valpo’s mission of educating the whole person – head, hands, and heart. He views this formation as sacred work, one that prepares students not simply for professional success, but for lives of purpose, service, and ethical leadership. He celebrates Valparaiso University as a place where learning and faith meet in meaningful ways, and where God’s presence is reflected through teaching, service, and community engagement.

At the same time, Rev. Konkol believes Valpo must continue reaching outward. He sees a university uniquely positioned to expand opportunity, strengthen partnerships, and extend its impact beyond campus while remaining faithful to its identity. This reaching includes welcoming learners from diverse backgrounds, deepening connections with alumni and supporters, and working alongside civic, faith-based, and global partners to address the challenges of our time.

Rev. Konkol’s excitement for Valpo is deeply personal. He has shared how the University has inspired him throughout his life – through its people, its values, and its commitment to community. His leadership is guided by love: love for students, for learning, and for one another. With confidence in Valpo’s strong foundation and hope for its future, Rev. Konkol invites the community to deepen its roots, expand its reach, and move forward together with faith and purpose.
