History-Class

Kayla Hestermann

I am investigating all the senior class gifts that have been given to the University. The first gifts I have found are from the 1930s and the most recent gift is from 2012. From the 1930s till 1970 it was common for the senior class to give material gifts including a sundial, a flag pole, the University seal in the floor of the Chapel narthex, and many more. After 1970 the gifts became monetary gifts with a specific purpose, ranging from scholarship money to new patio furniture for the Union. All the senior class gifts are unique! Utilizing the Valparaiso University newspaper, The Torch, I have been able to identify many of the class gifts. However, there are still many more to find!

This internship opportunity in the Archives has been a great experience. It is like no other history class that you can find at VU. It gives hands on experience working with primary documents. Other history classes will teach you about history. This internship lets you find the history. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone who is truly passionate about being a historian!
