ARTS & CULTURE
Find your voice through artistic expression with the arts Valpo has to offer.
The arts are a critical piece of the Valpo community. Many students are involved in the performing arts, musical groups, and visual arts. You can find connections you never thought possible through the diverse art community on campus, in the city of Valparaiso, and in Chicago.
Every day, student artists are given the opportunity to explore and exhibit their talents.
Just a few feet from the Harre Union, the Center for the Arts is home to musical, theatre, and artistic spaces, allowing students to delve into their own creativity. Each student is given the opportunity to display their work in unique spaces such as the Brauer Museum of Art, Duesenberg Recital Hall, and the University Theatre.
ARTS FROM ABROAD
Culture has a home at Valpo, where you can explore artistic traditions from around the world. You can explore diverse, global cultures right on Valpo’s campus with events such as the international film series and the World Banquet co-sponsored by the Valparaiso International Student Association and International Programs.
ART OF THE WORD
Every year, you can participate in Wordfest, a celebration of the beauty of the written word. You can interact with writers of all genres, such as poetry, drama, fiction, and nonfiction prose. Student writers are immersed in writing through workshops, meetings with writers, and joint classroom experiences.
BRAUER MUSEUM OF ART
The Brauer Museum is home to a nationally recognized collection of 19th-, 20th-, and 21st-century American art and includes works by Frederic Edwin Church, Asher B. Durand, Childe Hassam, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Ed Paschke.
Valpo students often create their own opportunities, from impromptu flash mobs to perennial performance powerhouses. Student organizations focusing on arts include these campus favorites:
- VUVox male acappella group
- Valparaiso University Ballroom offers dance lessons and social events as well as fielding a competitive ballroom-dance team
- VUDU comedy team
- Art Club
- Handbell Choir
- The Lighter, Valpo’s award-winning literary magazine
