MST active at Mathfest 2019

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics was active at Mathfest, the annual national summer conference of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), held in Cincinnati, Ohio July 31-August 3.

Associate Professor Mindy Capaldi organized sessions entitled “Enhance Your Teaching through Best Practices That Align with the Instructional Practices Guide” and “Teaching Mathematics Through Games”.

 

 

 

 

Professor and Associate Provost Rick Gillman taught a minicourse entitled “Game Theoretic Modeling for Math Majors”, organized a poster session on “The Program Review Experience”, spoke in an invited panel for early-career Project NExT faculty entitled “The Art of Saying ‘No’ (and sometimes ‘Yes’)”, and received an award for Meritorious Service from the Indiana Section of the MAA. Associate Professor Lara Pudwell attended the MAA Section Officers’ meeting as immediate past-chair of the Indiana Section of the MAA and served as a panelist in a forum on “Choosing Good Problems for Undergraduate Research in Mathematics” organized by the Undergraduate Research SIGMAA (Special Interest Group of the MAA).

 

Professor Zsuzsanna Szaniszlo participated remotely in the meeting of the MAA Committee on Competitions.

Rising senior Jacob Roth attended the meeting as part of a competitive summer Research Experience for Undergraduates program run through Grand Valley State University. At the meeting Jacob gave a talk entitled “Quantifying Interdependence in Voter Preferences”, based on his summer project.

Associate Professor Ken Luther also attended the meeting.
