MST active at JMM 2020

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics was well-represented at the Joint Mathematics Meetings (JMM) January 15-18 in Denver, Colorado. JMM is a joint conference of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) and the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and the largest annual mathematics conference in the world.

Associate Professor Alex Capaldi was elected Chair-Elect of the Biology Special Interest Group of the MAA (BIO-SIGMAA) and hosted a reunion dinner for alumni of the Valparaiso Experience in Research by Undergraduates in Mathematics (VERUM) program. Also, three of the four research posters presented by 2019 VERUM students at the undergraduate student poster session earned “honorable mention” citations.

Associate Professor Tiffany Kolba gave a talk entitled “The Mathematics Behind Twin Motherhood” in the AMS Special Session on Mathematics and Motherhood.

Associate Professor Lara Pudwell gave a talk entitled “Statistics on hypercube orientations” in the AMS Special Session on Experimental and Computer Assisted Mathematics.

Assistant Professor Karl Schmitt represented Valpo’s Data Science program in the graduate school fair.

Professor and Chair Zsuzsanna Szaniszlo participated in the meeting of the MAA Committee on Competitions and led the meeting of the MAA’s AMC-8 Editorial Board.
