Valparaiso University has launched the search for its 20th president — a visionary and mission-driven leader to guide the institution into its next era of academic excellence, faithful service, and transformative impact.

Valparaiso University is proud to welcome Rev. Brian E. Konkol, Ph.D., as our 20th president. With more than two decades of combined experience in higher education leadership, global service, and mission-centered work, Rev. Konkol brings a bold yet deeply grounded vision shaped by the Lutheran tradition. His proven record of expanding student engagement, strengthening academic excellence, and advancing institution-wide strategic initiatives reflects Valpo’s commitment to learning, faith, and service. His leadership will help propel the University into its next chapter of mission-centered growth, student success, and community impact.
We are grateful for the leadership of President José Padilla, J.D., whose dedication to strengthening Valpo’s academic mission and institutional foundation has positioned the University well for this next chapter. We look forward to the insight, energy, and care that Rev. Konkol will bring as he joins the Valpo family.

President José D. Padilla, J.D., will retire on December 31, 2025, at the conclusion of his contract. In anticipation, the Board of Directors has initiated a national search to identify his successor and ensure a smooth leadership transition.
The Presidential Search Committee, chaired by Jon A. Steinbrecher ’83, PED, commissioner of the Mid-American Conference and chair-elect of the Valparaiso University Board of Directors, includes representatives from the Board, faculty, staff, and alumni. Julie Winkler ’96, MBA, chief commercial officer at CME Group, serves as vice chair. Rebekah Arevalo, M.S., assistant vice president and chief of staff, has been appointed as administrative liaison to the committee, with Bianca Villarruel providing administrative support.
The committee is charged with conducting a thorough, inclusive, and transparent process to identify a president who will uphold Valpo’s mission and values — preparing students for lives of leadership and service in church and society.
We are committed to keeping the Valpo community informed throughout this important journey with transparency and regular updates as the search progresses.
