Graduate Financial Aid and Costs

Financing graduate school starts with understanding your options. Explore the financial aid process, scholarships, loans, tuition, payment options, and resources that can help you plan for your graduate education at Valpo while staying on track throughout your program.

Graduate financial aid can help make your degree more affordable. By completing the FAFSA and submitting any required documentation, you may be considered for federal loans, scholarships, and other funding opportunities. Applying early helps ensure you receive the maximum aid for which you’re eligible.

Typical Steps

  1. Complete the FAFSA.
  2. Submit any additional documents requested by Student Financial Services.
  3. Receive and review your financial aid offer.
  4. Accept or decline eligible loans.
  5. Complete Entrance Counseling and the Master Promissory Note (MPN), if required.
  6. Aid is applied to your student account before the start of the semester.
  7. Any remaining credit balance is refunded according to the university’s refund schedule.

Scholarships for graduate students include merit-based scholarships and the Back to Valpo scholarship.

Valparaiso University offers both Federal and private loan options. Federal Direct loans are available to students who complete the FAFSA and are enrolled at least half-time, with repayment generally beginning six months after graduation or if you drop below half-time enrollment. For those who need funding beyond their initial aid offer, private alternative loans are available through outside lenders. Before these funds can be disbursed, first-time borrowers must complete the Master Promissory Note (MPN)—a legal agreement to repay your loans—and Entrance Counseling, which explains the terms and your obligations as a borrower

Beyond traditional aid, the university’s student employment program allows you to earn wages through part-time work on or off campus. Valpo offers both federal and university-funded work-study positions, and all students are eligible to apply regardless of financial need. You can find current job postings and information regarding the pay scale by logging into the Valpo Career Hub (12twenty). Once you begin working, you will be paid bi-weekly via direct deposit after completing the required onboarding paperwork with the Office of Human Resources.
