FAQs
Second-, third-, and fourth-year Christ College students in good standing are eligible for up to $1,000 in funding for the following:
- Conference travel (please include a link to the conference website in your application)
- Commute to internship, student teaching, professional event (please specify)
- Scholarship (research or creative work)
- Supplies, materials, or fees (cannot include tuition at Valpo or at another institution)
- Professional development, organizational dues, or credentialing
Beginning in Fall 2026, Scholar Dollars will replace Study Abroad Scholarships. Please note that one cannot retroactively apply for funds to cover past expenses.
Before beginning the application process, please prepare the following:
- A current resume or CV (one page will suffice)
- A 300-word personal statement that connects your professional goals and education at Valpo to this experience (you’ll paste this into the form)
- A budget detailing your estimated expenses (use the provided template)
After the experience, you’ll submit a 500-word reflection that details your experience and speaks to its value to your academic and professional journey. This type of reporting is a typical requirement for any grant, so you’ll gain some additional professional development experience as you complete the process!
The Fall 2026 application cycle will close on November 2, 2026. It will reopen in 2027.
Yes, though your approval will be contingent upon your acceptance into the course. Your payment will not be processed until the dean’s office receives confirmation that you’ve been chosen to enroll. This means it may not be furnished in time to pay any requisite deposits.
If you’re not chosen to enroll in the course for which you submitted your funding application, you are welcome to apply again for another experience.
Upon completion of the form, you will receive an email with the subject line Christ College Scholar Dollars Application – Receipt. If you do not receive this email within a few hours, your application did not reach the dean’s office and you must resubmit. If received and approved, you will receive an email from christ.college@valpo.edu within 7-10 business days confirming approval and the forthcoming funds transfer. If your application requires additional information before we can approve, we will contact you and reopen the form so you may edit it.
The form will ask you to choose between a credit to your student account or a personal check. We’ll confirm the method you chose on the form in your acceptance letter, and, once you accept the award, you can expect the funds to be available in around 20 business days.
If for any reason your plans change, your conference or internship is cancelled, or you are otherwise unable to complete the experience outlined on your application, please let us know right away. We can help you apply the funds to a different experience.
Scholar Dollars have a variety of uses, but they cannot be used to cover tuition and fees at Valparaiso University or any other institution. They also can’t be used to cover room and board or direct classroom expenses like textbooks or technology procurement/repair. Resources for covering other types of expenses are available at valpo.edu/student-life/resources/student-support.
Once you receive $1,000 total in funding, you cannot apply again; however, these funds may be split across multiple applications and installments.
If for any reason an application is denied, you are eligible to apply again as long as you haven’t exceeded $1,000 in funding.
You are welcome to shape your reflection in your own way, but if you find prompts helpful, here are some suggestions:
a) What was something that you learned through this experience that was unexpected?
b) What was a challenge you faced through this experience?
c) How did this experience help you discern more about what you want to do in the future (in your career or life)?
