SWE Reaches Out to Students, Area Kids

The Society of Women Engineers at Valpo remains a strong force for enrichment, both on and off campus.

Valpo’s chapter conducts the Big SWEester, Little SWEester program to mentor and prepare incoming female students for their engineering courseloads and college life but the outreach hardly begins there.

SWE has made multiple visits to Cooks Corner Elementary School, where members encourage fifth-graders in the Makers Club to explore subjects and activities related to STEM fields. A partnership with College Mentors for Kids includes an annual engineering day to further expose children to career choices in some of the country’s most in-demand fields.

Students working toward degrees at Valpo enjoyed “The International Engineer” series of speakers, who shared their experiences working, studying and living in Switzerland, Lebanon, Germany, Norway and the United States.

The national organizing body has taken notice. Valpo’s chapter added National Outstanding Collegiate Section – Silver and Region H Outstanding Collegiate Section laurels to its collection of honors from SWE in the past year.
