Student Software

Valparaiso University has a Total Academic Headcount (TAH) site license for MATLAB with Simulink, an software tool used in engineering and the sciences for computation and data analysis. MATLAB is installed in all major engineering and mathematics labs in the Gellersen and Fites Centers, as well as in select open labs across campus. Additionally, all students and faculty may download and install an unlimited number of subscription copies of the program on their personal computers. The term of the license is one (1) year, renewable each summer. As long as a student is enrolled or a staff member’s status remains active, s/he can renew that license.

This is the full version of MATLAB, with no limitations on code size or functionality. The only restriction is that it cannot be used for for-profit ventures; it can be used for academic purposes only. Instructions for downloading and installing MATLAB are linked below, along with a list of frequently asked questions. Note that MATLAB 2016a is installed in all campus labs. Use of a newer version can lead to file incompatibilities when moving between a lab computer and a personal one.

As part of the Standard Suite, Valparaiso University licenses the following MATLAB toolboxes, which are available in both academic and personal licenses of the software:

  • Simulink
  • Bioinformatics
  • Control System
  • Curve Fitting
  • DSP System
  • Data Acquisition
  • Image Processing
  • Instrument Control
  • Optimization
  • Parallel Computing
  • Signal Processing
  • Simscape
  • Simscape Multibody
  • Simulink Control Design
  • Stateflow
  • Statistics and Machine Learning
  • Symbolic Math

Beyond the Standard Suite, Valparaiso University licenses the following additional MATLAB toolboxes, which are available in both academic and personal licenses of the software:

  • Communications System
  • Financial
  • Fuzzy Logic
  • Global Optimization
  • Image Acquisition
  • MATLAB Coder
  • Neural Network
  • Robotics System
  • Simscape Power Systems
  • Simulink Coder
  • Simulink Real-Time

FAQs

All students and faculty with a valid .edu e-mail address are eligible to download an education version of AutoCAD. This includes the core program, as well additional suites like Inventor Pro and 3DS Max. Students and staff members need only create an Autodesk account linked with their valpo.edu e-mail address to gain access to these software packages. Limitations include: academic use only; no for-profit work is to be done using this software; all drawings that are printed will feature an Autodesk watermark. AutoCAD 2016 is the currently deployed version on campus. Be wary of file compatibility issues between versions!

Download the AutoCAD Software

Mechanical Engineering students become familiar with SolidWorks, a computer aided design tool used widely in industry and education. A student version of the software is available for a cost from Dassault Systèmes, the maker of SolidWorks. Students must complete an eligibility form before they can purchase and download the software. The student edition is a yearly subscription which must be renewed. SolidWorks 2016-17 Education is the version currently deployed in labs. File compatibility issues may arise from sharing a file between versions.

Purchase SolidWorks Student

Valparaiso University has a campus-wide subscription to the Microsoft’s Office 365 suite, which students and staff members can download and license free of charge. Licenses remain active for one (1) year, and can be renewed by any user with an active valpo.edu e-mail address. In order to download the software, users must link their valpo.edu e-mail address to either a new or existing Microsoft account. This can be an Outlook, Hotmail, Live, or other account under the Microsoft umbrella of free services. Be sure to retain this login information for the purpose of renewing Office 365 in the future.

For help with Office 365, please consult the IT department’s Office 365 documentation.

Alternatively, students and staff can purchase Microsoft Office 2016 at a steep discount from the Kivuto Solutions “On-the-hub” e-store (described in detail in the next section, below). The difference between Office 365 and 2016 is that the former is a subscription product, whereas the latter is a perpetual license (never expires). Office 365 (which refers to the service, not the version) will update itself to the latest version of Office available with the user’s consent, while a perpetual license is not eligible to receive free version upgrades.

Download Office 365

Valparaiso University has relationships with Adobe, Microsoft, IBM, and others that allow students, faculty, and staff to download software at a reduced cost. Examples include Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Windows 10 Education, Microsoft Office 2016, Parallels Desktop, and SPSS Statistics. These software titles can be accessed by logging in to the Kivuto Solutions “On-the-hub” e-store using a Valpo username and password.
