Student Software

Valparaiso University has a Total Academic Headcount (TAH) site license for MATLAB with Simulink, an software tool used in engineering and the sciences for computation and data analysis. MATLAB is installed in all major engineering and mathematics labs in the Gellersen and Fites Centers, as well as in select open labs across campus. Additionally, all students and faculty may download and install an unlimited number of subscription copies of the program on their personal computers. The term of the license is one (1) year, renewable each summer. As long as a student is enrolled or a staff member’s status remains active, s/he can renew that license.

This is the full version of MATLAB, with no limitations on code size or functionality. The only restriction is that it cannot be used for-profit ventures; it is only for academic and personal use. Instructions for downloading and installing MATLAB are linked below, along with a list of frequently asked questions.

As part of the Standard Suite, Valparaiso University licenses the following MATLAB toolboxes, which are available in both academic and personal licenses of the software:

  • Simulink
  • Bioinformatics
  • Control System
  • Curve Fitting
  • DSP System
  • Data Acquisition
  • Image Processing
  • Instrument Control
  • Optimization
  • Parallel Computing
  • Signal Processing
  • Simscape
  • Simscape Multibody
  • Simulink Control Design
  • Stateflow
  • Statistics and Machine Learning
  • Symbolic Math

Beyond the Standard Suite, Valparaiso University licenses the following additional MATLAB toolboxes, which are available in both academic and personal licenses of the software:

  • Communications System
  • Financial
  • Fuzzy Logic
  • Global Optimization
  • Image Acquisition
  • MATLAB Coder

FAQs

All students and faculty with a valid .edu e-mail address are eligible to download an education version of AutoCAD. This includes Civil3D, as well as numerous other CAD tools, including Inventor Professional, Inventor CAM, Revit, Tinkercad, and Maya. Students and staff members need only create an Autodesk account linked with their valpo.edu e-mail address to gain access to these software packages. Limitations include: academic use only; no for-profit work is to be done using this software; all drawings that are printed will feature an Autodesk watermark.

Mechanical Engineering students become familiar with SolidWorks, a computer aided design tool used widely in industry and education. A student version of the software is available for a cost from Dassault Systèmes, the maker of SolidWorks. Students must complete an eligibility form before they can purchase and download the software. The student edition is a yearly subscription which must be renewed.

General Information

Valparaiso University has relationships with several vendors which allow students, faculty, and staff to download software at a reduced cost. These software titles can be accessed by logging in to the Kivuto Solutions “On-the-hub” e-store using a Valpo username and password.
