VU has had a Japanese program in place since 1986.
Three years of core courses are regularly offered in Japanese, with the possibility of independent study at the fourth-year level. The core courses fulfill the language requirements of such university majors as Chinese and Japanese Studies, International Economics and Cultural Affairs (IECA), and International Business.
