Biography
Katharina Uhde, Associate Professor of Music at Valparaiso University, is an internationally acclaimed violinist and musicologist. She is the author/editor of The Music of Joseph Joachim (Boydell & Brewer, 2018), The Art of Musical Ciphers, Riddles, and Other Sundry Curiosities (forthcoming 2026, with R. L. Todd), Mendelssohn Perspectives (2025, with Anna Celenza), Unity in Variety (2024, with Anna Celenza), and Joseph Joachim: Identities/Identitäten (2024, with Michael Uhde), and other works on Joachim.
She has recorded 4 CD albums (Brasilianische Kammermusik (2008, with Tatjana and Michael Uhde), Joseph Joachim Rediscovered (2020, with Dennis Friesen-Carper and Warsaw Radio Orchestra), With Heart & Soul (2025, with Sanja and Michael Uhde), and Joseph Joachim’s G-major Violin Concerto (forthcoming, 2025, with Belgrade Radio Orchestra). She has commissioned Ryan Molloy (“composer of the year” 2024 in Ireland) to compose Roscáth – a work reimagining J. Joachim – and to arrange Joachim’s and Stanford’s Irish Fantasies for orchestra, all to be featured on her fourth album with the RTÉ Orchestra Dublin and Kenneth Kiesler (2025).
She holds a DMA degree from the University of Michigan and a PhD in Musicology from Duke University. As a soloist, quartet and piano trio member she has won first prizes in international competitions in Czech Republic and Germany. She has also won the 2004 Concerto Competition of the University of Michigan, where she studied with support of a Fulbright grant. She has recorded several online videos with world-renowned pianist Bruno Canino, with whom she performed the Beethoven cycle in 2017. Uhde’s CD Joseph Joachim Rediscovered was generously supported by Valparaiso University (VU music department; the Provost’s Office, and the Office of International Programming).
Uhde has also released a Bärenreiter edition with works by Joachim, which she has also performed with orchestra in Ann Arbor (2018), Valparaiso, IN (2018), China (May 2019), and in Warsaw (October 2019). The premiere of two newly rediscovered Fantasies on Hungarian and Irish Themes by Joachim took place on July 12, 2019 in Baden-Baden, with the Baden-Baden Philharmonic Orchestra. She has appeared as a soloist with the Sinfonia Varsovia, the Goettinger Musikfreunde Orchestra, the Marburg University Orchestra, the UFRN Orchestra Natal, and the Belgrade University Orchestra. As a violin soloist, she has worked with conductors Dennis-Friesen Carper, Kenneth Kiesler, Volker Schmidt-Gertenbach and Pavel Baleff.
Uhde’s musicological articles, book chapters, and reviews have been published with Oxford University Press and Cambridge University Press, among others. Uhde was the co-organizer of a bi-lingual conference in April 2020, Joseph Joachim: Identitäten/Identities (Karlsruhe, Germany), for which she received funding from the Fritz Thyssen Foundation. Uhde regularly presents at conferences and gives 30 or so concerts and lecture recitals per year, and she has been live on the radio, including WFMT (January 2020).
