Remembering those lost to COVID-19

bells

On Tuesday, Jan. 19, at 4:30 p.m. CST, the Chapel of the Resurrection will be participating in a nationwide tribute to remember and honor the lives lost to COVID-19.

A time of prayer led by Chapel staff will be followed by the ringing of the Chapel of the Resurrection bells. Gather with us in-person near the Chapel’s campanile (bell tower) or virtually via .

You may also use this form to add the names of those lost.

Prayer for Lives Lost to COVID-19

Creator God, we believe that you made this universe and all that is in it, desiring that we would have abundant life, and so we come to you. We are overwhelmed by the numbers we hear: that COVID-19 has claimed the lives of over 9,000 people in our state; 300,000 people in our nation; and almost 2 million people worldwide.

And yet we are also underwhelmed by the numbers, because they sound like statistics: distant and impersonal.

Loving God, we believe that when a single sparrow falls to the ground, you see, and you care. So today we gather to remember that these numbers tell us of individual people created in your image. People you care about. People we care about. Mothers and fathers; siblings and friends; neighbors and coworkers.

God of eternity, grant them holy rest and let light perpetual shine upon them.

God of this moment, comfort us who mourn.

God of the future, bless our efforts to slow this disease, to care for one another, and to pursue your healing and wholeness.

To you, Holy One, we give our broken hearts, trusting that you will bind them up; our anxieties, trusting that you will grant us peace that passes understanding; our hopes, trusting in your powerful promises.

In the name of the Holy Trinity, Creator, Savior, and Sustainer, one God, we pray in sure and certain hope. Amen.
