Student Leadership

SALT

Students are invited and encouraged to participate in a variety of ministry and leadership opportunities through the Chapel of the Resurrection. Students are welcome to serve in both planning and leadership roles for all worship services. Indicate your interest here. Other ministry opportunities include SALT (Social Action Leadership Team), SIS (Sisters in Spirit), Kantorei (Chapel Choir, by audition), Peer Ministry (residential and cohort ministry), LuMin (ELCA campus ministry) and LCMS-U.

Students are also encouraged to bring their ideas and passions for new ministry experiences to the life of the Chapel.

The Mission of SALT

The Social Action Leadership Team (SALT) is the Spirit-led social justice ministry of the Chapel of the Resurrection at Valparaiso University in which students from all walks of life come together in community to embody the Christian call to be the “salt of the earth” (Matt. 5:13). SALT helps students develop a passion and practice of social action. SALTers reflect God’s love for people by cultivating the skills of community organizing, raising awareness, and fund development. SALTers are equipped to lead lives of social justice and serve as agents for positive change in their communities.

Every year, the Social Action Leadership Team (SALT) of the Chapel of the Resurrection at Valparaiso University selects one project for which to raise money, the World Relief Campaign. This is in addition to numerous activities done locally which generate hundreds of volunteer hours by students and benefit the Valparaiso area. SALT is involved in local volunteering, spring break service trips, and church-based community organizing.

World Relief Campaign 2021

In 2020-21 the Social Action Leadership Team (SALT) set out to support the work of the Community Change Center: We Are One Inc.The Community Change Center is a new organization based in Gary, Indiana and founded by a recent graduate of Valparaiso University’s Social Work department, Samantha Burgett. Our campaign entitled “A Haven for Hope: Restorative Housing” is working to raise money in an effort to rehabilitate two residential properties that will house formerly incarcerated individuals. SALTers had the opportunity to go to the properties and do some work while learning more about the programs that will be offered.
